As a Chinese student, my UK academic expectations related to overcoming the inherent challenges ingrained in the Chinese culture. Coming from a hierarchical culture meant that the teachers’ opinion was the only valuable contribution as position and age demand respect. With teacher-centred learning, students become passive learners, and they don’t enjoy active participation. Going to the UK as an international learner meant that I would overcome these shortcomings through a deep learning experience, active participation, experiential and enquiry as a learning approach and teamwork.
