Alexander Calandra (“Angels on a Pin”) and James Paul Gee on Grading with Games

Instructions

Read the very short article by Alexander Calandra (“Angels on a Pin”) then watch the entire James Paul Gee video. The two pieces have a lot of similarities in terms of points they are trying to make. Interestingly, the Calandra piece was written in 1968, while the Gee video is from 2010.

Using the ideas they bring up, discuss yourself in relationship to the type of student and problem-solver that you are. Feel free to incorporate Mike Rose here also. You can also respond to these critiques of our educational system, if you like, but please talk about yourself and your experiences to make your points.

All the two authors believe that any question has a number of options to it, only that for one to decide on which option stands out best, they need to weigh out whether it matches with the demands placed in line and the context it is place. The authors and speaker in the video have also advised teachers and lecturers to be listeners rather than just markers because if they can offer an ear to the students, then they will be able to gain more skills and learn to defend their position and ideologies as well.
