Europe experienced territorial disagreements and other tussles over boundaries. A while after the start of the war, a German submarine sunk a British passenger ship killing 128 Americans. Tension between America and Germany started surfacing at this moment. Prior to the start of the war, the incumbent president of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, had pledged neutrality, a position that was widely acclaimed by most Americans. Being a close trading partner to America, Britain contributed to the urge by America to join the war, owing to the series of attacks its ships were receiving from Germany. Germany was incessantly trying to quarantine the British Isles, an issue that added further tension between the two countries (Zieger & Zieger, 2001).
