This chapter provides an insight on the history of American police, as well as the manner in which the police have evolved over the years. Policing in the United States is described in three historical periods, which include  the colonial era and early republic, which entailed watch system and slave patrols. Secondly, there was a political era, which included sheriffs-present in rural areas and U.S Marshals as it was designed to assist enforce the law in the west. Thirdly, there was the professional era, which is an era that was supposed to stay out of politics and the main task of the police was fighting crime.
