On December 26, 1860, Fort Sumter was under threat by Major Robert Anderson with control of communication and supplies going to the union. The tensions subsisted, and war ensued on 12th April 1861. In Virginia, the 1st Battle of Manassas was fought; both the Confederate and Union forces involved skilled and unskilled volunteers resulting in a brutal, unorganized and messy battle. The Confederate troops were victorious prompting the federal government to re-organize (“American Civil War | History of the United States | 1861-1865 | Documentary “).
