The study was designed to explain the effects of chronic absenteeism on school dropout rates. The correlation of chronic absenteeism to four-year graduation rate and post-secondary acceptance was also examined while controlling for specific student and school characteristics. Secondary data was gathered from New Jersey Department of Education and was limited to high schools found on the school performance report which formed our base population which was further narrowed to 371 cases. The data was analyzed with the aim of forming an appreciation of the challenge that is chronic absenteeism and how greater comprehension of the challenge can facilitate an improvement of school attendance in New Jersey.
