Bringing them home: separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families

Identify an area where assimilation had negative health consequences for Aboriginal Australian people.

Answer preview

Assimilation among the Aboriginals took place during the 1950’s and 1960’s where numerous numbers of Indigenous kids were taken away from their relations in order to improve the cause of assimilation. Hasluck (1953 p. 16 ) stated that assimilation refers in a realistic sense to the period of time it was anticipated that every  individual who had aboriginal blood or varied blood in Australia, would  live their lives like additional white Australians do.
