The Unruh Civil Rights Act is a Californian law that prohibits discrimination based on sex, race, age, national origin, ancestry, color, marital status, disability, medical condition, and sexual orientation. The law, enacted in 1959, and named for its author, Jesse M. Unruh, is under the code California Civil Code section 51. The law has been interpreted in many ways during court cases involving discrimination. One such case is the Doe v. California Lutheran High School Ass’n. In this case, a teacher had discovered that two of the female students confessed to being lesbians and having a sexual relationship. The school head called the two students up and expelled them on account of their sexual relationship.
