Employee motivation, or staff motivation, is undeniably one of the most vital aspects in an organization which determine how effective the human resources assets are within that organization (Devadass, 2004). With the growing competition within markets across the world, the competitive edge of firms is increasingly being founded on the employees, with regard to how they are competent and able to deliver the objectives of the firm. Employee motivation is linked with a series of benefits for an organization, including employee retention and happier workers, who are more productive than ones that are, demoralized (Ramlall (2004). Firms use a wide range of strategies to motivate their staff, including monetary and non-monetary approaches. This also relates to various types of motivation, the most popular of which include intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. According to Devadass (2011), intrinsic motivation is a form of employee motivation which is coming from within a member of staff related to job satisfaction, feeling of enjoyment for a job, and personal fulfillment; while intrinsic motivation describes internal aspects that trigger a workers to put more effort in pursuing the pre-determined organizational goals, and may include better pay, incentive for bonuses, promotion and recognition, among others (Dobre, 2013). Different people are motivated by different things.
