Metropolitan area network (MAN) is the network that connects computers in the geographic regions like a city or a campus. MAN covers a larger area than local area network (LAN) but smaller than wide area network (WAN). A backbone forms part of a network that allows the exchange of information between different local area networks. A backbone can either be connecting different networks in a building or different buildings in a university. Two types of backbones are commonly used in MANs, the distributed layer backbone, and the collapsed backbone. The distributed backbone has connectivity devices connected to a series of devices, such as switches, routers or hubs, in a hierarchy. In this backbone, all of the devices share the transmission media. It’s mostly used in large scale networks for example in a building where every floor has its LAN which connect to a router or a hub.
