Between 1885 and 1908, Belgium’s king Leopold II transformed the Belgium Congo into his personal vassal state. This documentary, which delves into the history of the White King, Red Rubber, and Black Death, elaborates on how families in the Congo were held hostage to king Leopold II’s greed more than a century ago. It was not uncommon for the Congolese to be starved to death, arrested and detained, or even have their children’s hands hacked off when they did not deliver the expected amount of rubber to Belgian officials who had been appointed by Leopold II to oversee his interests in their nation.
