There are different types of theories that have been proposed to explain the incidence of workplace stress. The vitamin model of stress in the workplace holds that job characteristics tend to affect the mental health of employees in the same way that vitamins affect human health. This means that job qualities have to be processed at moderate levels, because too much or too little of characteristics like job autonomy, task feedback, or job demands can cause an imbalance that leads to stress (Mark & Smith, 2008). The jobs characteristics model proposes that it is negative and positive job characteristics that create the mental states in employees. This means that re-aligning different tasks or re-designing the jobs can help to alleviate stress among the workers. The demands-control model is based on job control and job demands; and proposes that stress can result from situations where employees have no job control but experience heightened levels of demand (Mark & Smith, 2008).
