  1. Why isn’t having the greatest amount of technical expertise the key to being a good supervisor at Google?

Supervisory roles are about leading a team, ensuring its well-coordinated, motivated and empowered to perform the task. Technical skills are necessary when performing the technical task but rarely in building relationship with people.   Being a good supervisor who inspires results from the team requires one to build string relationship with the team members.  Relationship are built on care, trust and mutual support and these three do not depend of technical skills but personality of the leader (Reissner, 2014, p. 5).

There is a common saying that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.  Although the company had supervisors with excellent technical skills, the supervisors had to prove that they were interested in their team members. It was not about how much information and experience about the company and work they had but how much they cared and were interested in working with the employees. The care and interest fosters sense of belonging and motivation among the team members (Reissner, 2014, p. 12).  The team members must feel trusted by their supervisors and they must trust the supervisors with their work and personal interest.  Trust requires one to consider the needs and emotions of the other party. Good supervisors foster mutual support   between them and the team members.   Both parties support each other to achieve their goals.   The supervisor allows the employees to develop new ideas and encourage autonomy.
