Topic
Discrimination and Racism
Instructions
For this discussion, we are going to talk about discrimination and racism. I would like you to:
1.) Think of a time that you felt discriminated against. If this has never happened to you, you may discuss a time when a friend or loved one felt discriminated against. What were the circumstances surrounding this? Thinking back on the event sociologically, why do you think you were discriminated against? Was this individual or institutional? If you were in a position of power, how would you ensure that this would not happen again?
2.) Think of a setting in which institutional racism is known to occur- housing/credit, healthcare, immigration, criminal justice/courts and employment/education. Discuss how institutional racism occurs in this setting- through what mechanism? Do a Google search and locate an example of this in action (newspaper article, research study in a journal, etc). Discuss what you have found. Do you believe that institutional racism has occured in the context of your example?

Many people have at one time faced discrimination in one way or another. Mostly many people are discriminated due to their color, sex or even due to their disabilities. I have never been caught up in such discriminations but I have seen my friend being discriminated for having a disability and for her gender of female. She was working in a certain company and as hardworking as she was, she kept on getting negative remarks about her job. In the work many people isolated her and most of the times she spent the day lonely and even with the cases of trainings many of the co workers did not want to work with her.
