Drug abuse refers to the habitual misuse of addictive prescription or illegal drugs. Addiction that is facilitated by habitual drug abuse happens over three stages. In the first stage, an individual who repeatedly uses a drug even after the recommended limit develops a tolerance for it.

This means that the user’s body experiences diminished effects from the regular intake of the drug as it finds ways to handle the chemical imbalance that the drug causes within it. In the second stage, the user becomes physically dependent on the drug, as he experiences withdrawal symptoms every time he decides to stop taking it- even if for a short period.
