There are challenges, however, that come into play when a leader would want to apply emotional intelligence, especially in an African context. The professor uses this example because the speech is actually happening in an African country, Kenya specifically. In the African context, emotion is a touchy subject, especially for male leaders. There are gender stereotypes that regulate how male leaders are to express their emotions in the arena of leadership. In an African context, emotions like when, how and where to cry are not warranted; the alpha males are raised to suppress their emotions except anger. In conclusion, emotional intelligence should be a real feeling and not an act. It should be based on nineteen competencies in the areas of self-awareness, social awareness and relationship management. In fact, emotional intelligence is now taught as a hard skills set and not a soft skill as it was in the past.
