The Everybody Sports Club (ESC for short) is a medium-sized registered club in the Hunter region of New South Wales. It offers its members and their visitors a range of services from drinks and food to entertainment, a gymnasium and a bowling green. It employs about 60 people, a handful of whom are full-time permanents but most are part-time casuals.

A minority of these employees are members of United Voice, the trade union that recruits workers in the registered clubs industry. The local Organiser for the union, Emily Bellisimo, does not visit the club very often and there are no workplace delegates.

The ESC’s Manager is Kate Fitwell. Kate is worried about staff turnover, especially amongst casual employees. The staff are leaving the organisation in unusually high numbers and she is finding it difficult to recruit new people. It is costing the club a fortune and threatening the quality of the services it provides.

Kate has always thought of herself as a sensible and well-informed manager who could talk to anyone. Indeed, before she took on this bigger job, she had always found it easy to communicate with employees about their concerns. Not here. She is struggling to understand what the problem is, let alone what to do about it.

THE TASK:

Your task is to prepare advice for Kate (in the form of a report) about how to investigate the causes of her staff turnover problem and potential solutions. More specifically, she wants you to address the following questions:

  1. How should Kate gather information and analyse possible causes of her turnover problem?
  2. What are two of the most likely causes of these problems?
