The Kansas-Nebraska Act was drafted by Senator Stephen Douglas of Illinois. The Act was passed by the United States Congress in 1854 bringing to the fore the slavery issues in both the North and the South (Gurock, 344). This Act was passed to give freedom to the people of Kansas and Nebraska to choose whether to allow slavery within their borders. The Act, however, was contrary to one Missouri Compromise of 1820 which had been passed to prohibit slavery in the North. The passing of the Kansas Nebraska Act infuriated the Northern residents who were anti-slavery. This led to the fallout of the two factions and the passing of the Act became the most significant factor that led to the civil war. Violence erupted following repeated disputed elections which led to the place being nicknamed “the bleeding Kansas” (Gurock, 567)
