Issues that affect the girl child have been explored in many literary works. In the past there was a societal expectation of how a girl was supposed to behave. Some of those demands have changed or with time have been rejected altogether. All the same, readers have many references that tell them that a girl was supposed to be submissive and live a life so as they could get to be noticed by men since the only logical and ultimate achievement for a girl was marriage. The job of molding women was mostly the place of their mothers who would criticize, admonish and reprimand until when the girl child was considered an adult.
