Chapter 2 mainly focuses on the 19th-century transformation of the United States landscape into a human-built world made by African slaves and European settlers.   Further, the chapter explores various issues that motivated individuals to build a human world such as political and economic forces, even though there were individuals that were driven by the divine mission. In the sense that, people saw technology in a religious form, thus, serving the religious ends that would enable them to form a second Creation. The settlers believed that technology was a gift from God that would allow them to alter the New World into the Garden of Eden.
