Organizational structure

Syngenta adopts a flat organizational structure as it involves few middle management levels and staff. An organizational structure describes the distribution and position of units within it, as well as the nature of relationships between units. A flat organization structure differs from flat structure in terms of managers’ control and their involvement in the organizational functions. In a flat structure, the manager supervises a larger number of employees and the chain of command is minimized (DuBrin, 2010). As such, the control and guidance from managers above the chain is limited, leaving more control and responsibilities to the lower managers.

The primary benefit of this structure relates to the autonomy and independence of lower level managers. The underlying principle of a flat organisation is a well-trained workforce which is very productive and more involved in decision-making and overseeing individual performance. Employee are less supervised or closely monitored by a layer of managers (DuBrin, 2010).  This structure is particularly useful in organizations that want to maximize the performance of employees and impact the overall productivity of the company.
