This chapter provides an insight in incarceration and prison society, when it begins by providing the difference between contemporary institutions and the old-style “big house” prisons.  Whereby the maximum security prisons before 1950s were a massive wall, where the same has changed in the contemporary institutions, where since 1970s minority representation has advanced and gangs have raised their level of violence in prisons.  The chapter further goes ahead to provide the three models of incarceration which include, custodial model, rehabilitation and reintegration model, which is a model that emphasizes the maintenance of the offenders ties to community and family, as a form of reform.
