During the visit of the La Brea Tar Museum, I was able to know some history about the Saber-toothed cat. I learned that the cat was among the group of the largest Pleistocene carnivores that became extinct in the last 10,000 years. However, the real cause of extinction is not known as different scholars bring forth their ideas. Some of the potential cause of extinction include human overkill, change of climate, and both direct and indirect effects of human activities. At the same time, scholars have argued that such large animals were unlikely to be hunted by individuals but were prone to competition for prey species by the humans. I learned that when prey is limited, most carnivores end up consuming carcasses and end up processing bones. Thus, it was hypothesized that prey became scarce, which was attributed to the fact that human beings competed with the carnivores, or change of climate, such big cats opted to consume hard bones from carcasses and tough tissues.
