Many researchers and experts have attempted to define logistics, information, logistics information systems, and information systems. While the definitions may vary in wording and implications, the overarching ideas remain the same: that logistics information system embodies the essence of using current and emerging information and communication technologies, to ensure that the production process results in the cost-effective realization of the consumers’ requirements (Johnson et al., 1998; Stales & Seddon, 2004, p. 17-20; Snow & Hare, 2012, pp.1-5). More specifically, Somoyiwa (2010) defines logistics as the strategic process of “managing the acquisition, movement, and storage of materials, parts and finished inventory (and the related information flows) through the organization and its marketing channel in such a way that current and future profitability is maximized through the cost-effective fulfillment of orders” (p. 4). Going by this definition, logistics exist to add value by availing products and services in the right place and time (Somoyiwa & Adewoye, 2010, p. 41). This relates to another generally accepted definition of logistics, that which includes the so-called 7 Rs of logistics. This 7 R’s definition implies that for logistics to be said to have added value to a product, it should avail the right product, in the right quantity or amount and condition, at the right time, at the right place, for the right customer, and at the right price or cost (Nelson et al., 2005, p.200).
