The four levels of competence are also referred to as the stages of learning. It is argued that before a learning experience starts, learners are not aware of how much they know or conscious of their competence. Abraham Maslow forwards a theory that offers simple ways of understanding human behavior in learning^[1]. He came up with stages of learning that individuals go through as they attain the competence of specific skills. These competence stages may overlap depending on what need motivates the individual at a given time or depending on psychological and physical circumstances surrounding the learner^[2]. The paper describes how a friend of mine passed through the four stages of learning before becoming a competent football player.
