  1. The network interface layer – also called the network access layer places the network packets on the medium as well as receives the packets onto the network medium. This allows different kinds of networks to connect in a single network. Examples of this layer include LAN and WAN technologies.
  2. Internet layer – this is the layer that is responsible for packaging, routing, and addressing the functions of the protocols. The core protocols of the layer are internet protocol (IP), address resolution protocol (ARP), internet  control message protocol (ICMP), and internet group management protocol (IGMP)
