The book begins with a vivid description of the circumstances that pushed the idea of the experiment to the fore; an invitation to the challenge at an extravagant sumptuous meal with an executive. If somebody was going to reconnoiter the corollaries of welfare reform then it would be her. As extreme as the decision seemed she overcame her fears and set the rules; she would not engage skills obtained from her journalism career, she would take the job that paid the most and ensure she held it and would get the cheapest living quarters she would come across. Eventually, circumstances lead her to break all those rules she had set. At some point, she had assumed a variety of personas. She also set a variety of limits so as to move the investigation along. Ehrenreich did not set out to be poor her objective being sole to scrutinize if low wage workers were making enough money-income well enough to meet their expenses and then some (Ehrenreich 2001).
