The plot of the films focuses on the Ouija board that brings about spiritual possession among the living. The Ouija board is also known as the spirit board as result of its ability to evoke the powers of the spirits. Traditionally these boards were utilized as a way of communicating with the dead by spiritualists. Development of these boards can be traced back to the Chinese song dynasty during which planchette writing was utilized as an ostensible means of communication with the spirit world through special rituals. This practice remains a popular culture in China until it was illegalized and banned during the Qing Dynasty. Similar spiritual practices were also applied in Greece, ancient India and medieval Europe.
