According to Arnold and Lal, citizens are mostly now aware of their rights because many of them do not see the relevancy of familiarizing oneself with legal procedures when there is no concern for such requirement. Considering the lack of awareness of one’s rights, the citizens become easy targets of the lawful perpetrators who intend to take advantage of the state of unawareness to expose the people in illegal procedures for personal gains. Much of the victimization of people due to lack of knowledge to their rights is largely notable from as early stages as the arresting point, where those in defense position do not necessarily understand the legal protocol in which to follow for the actual arrest to take place. Some of the rights-related matters of concern during and after an arrest involve reading of Miranda rights, knowledge to probable cause leading to an arrest, and legal representation that the defense requires once an arrest is made official. Mishandling or misrepresentation of these rights can lead to premature incarceration of the accused.
