Poverty is possibly one of the most important social crises facing humanity today, as it has for centuries. Poverty is associated with an array of unwanted social problems, including hunger, malnourishment and crime, among others (The Borgen Project). Although the world has been experiencing tremendous developments in virtually all spheres, including technology, industries and social aspects, poverty remains a major issue. According to an article published by Thomas Pogge of the Carnegie Council of Ethics in International Affairs in 2005, the fact that the global average income has been growing has not helped the situation (Pogge). Instead, this is a stark inequality in income, which has perpetuated a situation where there are nations which are too rich, and others which are too poor. Accordingly, there are still billions of people across the world who have to contend with severe poverty. The people in these poor nations are condemned to evils of severe poverty, including enslavement, illiteracy, ill-healthy, social exclusion, death, and low life expectancy (Pogge).
