Problems in Designing an Experimental Research Study

Topic

Problems in Designing an Experimental Research Study

Instructions

Apply the scientific method to the information included within the scenario and develop a null and a research hypothesis based on it. Using the hypotheses you have developed, compare the characteristics of the different experimental research designs discussed in the Skidmore (2008) article and choose the one that is most appropriate to adequately test your hypotheses. Identify potential internal threats to validity and explain how you might mitigate these threats. Apply ethical principles to the proposed research and describe the implications of this type of research in terms of the population(s) and cultural consideration(s) represented in the sample(s) within the scenario.

Answer preview

The research design described in the article varies in their characteristics, but they all entail testing a hypothesis.  The pre-experimental research designs include one-shot-case study, one – group pretest post test design, and static group comparison design. The one-shot case study is a pre-experiment, which is characterized by lack of essential components of an experimental design (Sani & Todmann, 2006). For instance, participants are randomly assigned to a group, and a single group of participants is used.  There are no controls for the threats to reliability and validity of the data.
