Edwin L. Artzt was a CEO in P&G from 1990 to 1995 (Procter & Gamble, 2006a). Artzt was a transformational leader who used his positional authority with an intention of taking the company into the next competitive and productive level. Using his transformation motive, Artzt led P&G into a major restructuring effort introduced officially in 1991. The restructuring effort involved cutting cost in the most relevant manner possible, an idea that led to closure of 30 P&G factories and eliminated 13,000 jobs, which translated into 12% of the company’s total workforce at that time (Advameg, Inc., 2017). Use of positional authority, which only values the rightness of leader, Artzt found himself in some troubles, such as his controversy with media that arose after directing law officers to investigate his aides to determine who was calling reporters on leadership matters (Safire, 1991). Calling it ‘error in judgment’, Artzt apologized when he was portrayed as an invader of his subordinates’ privacy.
