The demographic facet of democratic urban spaces characterizes the capacity to accommodate people with different cultural practices and views, as well their different uses of land. The first view, diversity, stems from the urban theory drawn from Aristotle’s view that the city comprises different people who determine the existence of a city (Cunningham, 2011). Some scholars of urban justice and design stress the need to acknowledge diversity without inclination to marginalization or homogenization, to maintain civility- a mode of living where different people acknowledge their differences and learn to live harmoniously (Glaeser, 2011). Diversity is also approached in terms of land practices or uses, attracting different groups of people, which nurtures the liveliness of urban environments (Purcell, 2013). Based on these views, diversity is applied as a conceptual instrument of evaluating upshots of urban designs and policies as either air or unjust by examining whether particular groups of people are victimized, or whether the plans are accommodative of diversity (Purcell, 2013; Cornwall & Coelho, 2007).
