Reflection Paper: Importance of virtue ethics

An Entrance Paper is a 1 page, 400-500 word single-spaced typed paper which reflects on the reading for the class. Think of the paper as an Executive Summary of the reading. This paper is to be submitted via Blackboard by the beginning of the class and may form the basis for the class discussion. The grade will depend on evidence of having read and reflected upon the assignment material. From time to time the students may be asked to reflect on current events or to find current examples of the materials covered in the text. If a student has an excused absence the entrance paper may be turned in early. If the paper is not completed by the assigned date, it will be accepted up to 24 hours later but will not receive more than 5 points

A keen analysis of the readings underlines the importance of virtue ethics, particularly when it comes to fulfilling communal obligations. By virtue of existing among others in communities, individuals are expected to take up certain responsibilities, and the importance of developing the right virtues can therefore not be underscored. In doing so, a delicate balance has to be struck between defining oneself and fulfilling the community obligations. Even though people are subjected to different opportunities and resources while growing up, they are required to determine their personal dreams, choices, and preferences in life. Based on the responses that people receive in their immediate environment, they are able to modify their actions in a manner that suits their personal needs.
