. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Meal Charge Policy

The meal charge policy facilitates an agreement between school administrators, food service professionals, students, and parents whereby students in participating schools are permitted to receive ready meals at reduced or paid rates (Kline, 2016).

This policy is important in the moderation of childhood obesity for a variety of reasons. Primarily, it allows school children to receive healthy meals, which leads them to stay focused throughout the day (Kline, 2016). The meal charge policy also benefits children from low-income backgrounds, who may not necessarily have the funds to pay for healthy meals, to receive healthy food products within the school environment. In many school districts, students are actually allowed to choose from alternate or reimbursable meals.
