In a handbook of poetry by Mary Oliver, she tries to explain how inflections can be used as a style to bring about meaning in a poem.  In her analogy, she looks at three different words; Hush, please be quiet and shut up (Oliver, 23). The three words though similar in meaning are often said to different set of   individuals carrying unique inflections on them. For instance, the first word hush is often said with a low tone almost a whisper and is usually used to speak to children. The second, please be quiet carries with it a more civil tone and is slightly curt. This means it is used to give a polite warning. The third, shut up is usually abrupt and usually is curious and abrupt. It is important to note that the level of inflection in each is different. Therefore, though the words may carry the same definition, they do not bear the same meaning in writing.
