“The world is full of claims of new and exciting things: from a better mousetrap to an instant release for untapped inner powers – or a surefire sure for anxiety. Each one brings with it the problem of deciding whether it is, indeed, a great breakthrough or just another dose of snake oil.” (George Curtis, 1996).

The recent drive towards integrating evidence-based treatment for individuals for individuals with mental health illnesses, substance use disorders, and learning disabilities. Specific guidelines have been developed by various researchers to help students and clinicians in the process of evaluating the levels of effectiveness of different case management, and psychotherapeutic interventions. The goal of this assignment is to familiarize you with current models for the evaluation and criticism of evidence-based research. These models help the practitioner or student critique the level of evidence that is produced by empirical research. Without such models, there would be no standardized means to determine the validity of the claims in literature published on the effectiveness of specific interventions.

Include at least one empirically based research article that evaluates an intervention related to an individual experiencing a social problems (e.g. school drop-out, delinquency, homelessness, interpersonal violence) or an individual with a diagnosis of a mental health illness, substance use disorder, learning disability,
etc. For example you might decide to focus on a psychoeducation program or family intervention with individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Locate and incorporate one or two empirical journal articles on that ONE psychoeducation program into your paper. Then write a paper that demonstrates their understanding of

1) the social problem or diagnosis,

2) the chosen intervention,

3) the effectiveness of the intervention with the chosen client system/population, and

4) the evidence provided in the research supporting the intervention.

The paper should be 6 pages in length, with a title page and reference page (neither count toward the page-length). Use Times New Roman 12 pt, or Ariel 11 pt font. Paper must be APA formatted. A minimum of 4 scholarly peer-reviewed sources from professional journals are required for this paper.

Answer preview

Schizophrenia is a mental condition which affects the thoughts, feelings and behaviours of the individuals suffering from the condition. It remains one of the least common mental conditions but its symptoms are very disabling (Insel, 2010). Individuals affected by the condition interpret reality abnormally and suffer from delusions which adversely impacts their routine functioning. As a result of these disabling effects of the condition, many individuals commonly require lifelong interventions to help them cope with the mental disorder. The disease developed gradually and early identification remains critical to successful application of different interventions in the management of the condition.
