Instructions

Describe what types of applications that might use frequency division multiplexing (FDM), time division multiplexing, and dense wavelength division multiplexing. How do the four components of the physical layer of the open systems interconnection (OSI) model relate to FDM? Your paper should contain a minimum of 300 words and be formatted using APA style. Use your own words, and include citations and references as needed to avoid plagiarism.

Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) combines many signals on a single channel for communication. The signals are assigned different channels within the main channel. FDM is mainly applied in radio broadcasting. Different FM or AM radio stations have different carrier frequencies in special bands. In AM, for instance, the frequencies are set between 530 and 1700 KHz, and 88 to 108 MHz in FM. During broadcasting, all signals are multiplexed before transmission. On receipt at the receiver, only the tuned in (set) frequency is broadcasted. FDM is also used in television broadcasting and in some early cellular telephones (Thakur, 2017).
