This serves as your Week 3 tutorial. In this week’s tutorial, we aim to develop an understanding of Social Health Determinants. As you will note there are a number of definitions and opinions that vary in relation to which are more significant. For example, some may argue that education is the main determinant while others may suggest access to health services. As a result, we try to assess which are applicable to a specific Indigenous population. It is important to firstly identify social health determinants and adopt a solid overview of the big picture. Lastly, there is run-down housing and overcrowding as a social determinant of health, where poor housing and overcrowding contributes mainly in the spread of communicable diseases (Reading & Wien, 2009). Such diseases are preventable, especially among individuals that have affordable housing, which is not the case with the aboriginal people who do not have the ability to afford proper housing. The rationale for this is due to lack of proper education the aboriginals do not have the ability to get proper employment that would allow them to have affordable housing rather than live in overcrowded areas.
