Reality Television and The Problem of Women’s Singleness

Beginning from the 1990s, reality television became ingrained in virtually all aspects of modern life (Taylor, 2012). There were assorted social experiment style programmes like Big Brother, Makeover Shows, Survivor, and even reality shows which focused on health and weight loss or cooking competitions. The most popular reality television shows, though, quickly became those which presented themselves as mediators of romantic relationships. These shows were hinged on the notion that the desperateness of single women had grown so marked that there was a need to address and solve this ‘problem’ in a public forum in order to show single women what wrongs they were committing that were reinforcing their ‘single’ state. Reality dating shows like ‘The Farmer Wants A Wife’, ‘The Bachelor’, and ‘Tough Love’ reinforced the notion that singleness in a woman is an indication that there is something fundamentally wrong with the woman in question (Taylor, 2012).
