First, the Aborigines Protection Act (APA) enacted in 1869 provided for the colonial powers to control the native people in terms of how they married, interacted with each other, among other aspects of life. The legislation resulted in the enslavement of the indigenous people. It also was used to remove children from their families (Swaisland, 2000). They were taken to churches, and adoption homes among other places. The impacts of these developments included loss of culture and language. As the people interacted with people from other native languages as well as the English colonialists, new language forms develops. As the culture and heritage were eroded, so were the native languages. Over time, new language forms such as pidgins and creoles developed. Other associated historical developments include the stolen generation and the intergenerational trauma, which form an integral part of the Australian history (Swaisland, 2000). The impacts of these historical actions have been felt across generations.
