In this paper, you will choose a short passage from Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense”, Edgar Allen Poe’s “Fall of the House of Usher”, or from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and write an in-depth close-reading on that passage.

The author describes the first time that he saw the House of Usher. It is nothing short of a sheer grotesque and horrid sight, from his insurmountable array of the description of the house. This was a foreshadowing of the suffering and darkness that is to befall Roderick Usher, and his ailing sister Madeline.
