Power corrupts; this is a statement that rings so true in the story of the Animal Farm. It does not matter how much suffering a human being faces, once they get the taste of power, they forget why they needed to end the injustice meted out on the common people by those in power. While the animals in the story initially intend to create an equal society, power corrupts the pigs that in the long run, are no different from their previous oppressors.
