More than 4 billion people across the world can access the internet through different digital devices (McDonalds, 2018). The internet has become a tool of attaining different education, economic, health and business objectives. However, evidence shows that many people, especially in rural areas are still left out of the digital revolution (Kormos, 2018). This paper examines the phenomenon of the digital divide to examine the differences and dynamics of mobile phone between rural and urban populations. In particular, this paper is based on analysis of mobile phone usage by people in urban and rural areas of Tiruchirapalli and Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.
