Answer preview

Additive bilingualism is a situation that arises when a person adds a second language and culture without displacing or replacing displacing the first language and culture. For example, the North- Americans have English as their first language and also learn French or Spanish and do not lose their English. The value that is added to a person’s life through additive bilingualism is not only being able to communicate in multiple languages but being part of multiple cultures and this adds value to one’s social, economic and cultural life. Moreover, additive bilingualism may result in one developing a positive attitude (Baker 2000).
