From a historical perspective, women have always earned less wages as compared to their male counterparts. The wage gap has persisted over the years, though it has narrowed over the last few decades. After the Second World War, the ratio between the wages of men and women persisted to be reasonably stable, with most women in the job market earning approximately sixty cents for each dollar a man earned. During the 1980s, the wage difference started shrinking as the earnings of women relative to men’s rose rapidly from 60.2% that they received previously to 71.6% (Blau & Kahn, 2017).
