Describe at least three challenges nurses face today in care delivery. These can be ethical, legal, financial, or social. Provide at least one way to successfully overcome each challenge.

Explain each of the Institute of Medicine’s five core competencies and describe ways in which nursing practice can meet each of these. Identify at least one obstacle for each and explain in detail how it can be overcome.

Another challenge facing nurses today in their need to offer quality care is mismanaged care (Cowen & Moorhead, 2014). This is an issue that is actually beyond the nurses’ scope of work. Nurses are sometimes required to work in managed institutions. The mismanagement in these institutions presents nurses with ethical issues like failed teamwork resulting in uncoordinated care as promised by the management. There is also the case where management in health institutions misuses financial incentives to benefit managed care institutions instead of the patients. In early 200, there was a huge concern that many managed care institutions were focused on the bottom line in lieu of quality care. The nurses who work in these institutions are faced with dilemmas because they see what is wrong, but they cannot speak or act because of gag rules. This challenge can only be dealt with by putting in force the Managed Care Consumer Protection Act. One of the rights contained in this act is one that relates to financial compensation.
The third challenge facing nurses today in their need to provide quality healthcare is safe patient handling (Cowen & Moorhead, 2014). Nurses work hard at their job, but they should not risk their lives as they try to save other’s. One of the greatest dangers facing nurses is the challenge of developing back injuries. Some patients come in with more weight that a nurse is able to lift. This is prevalent especially in the cases where patients need to be transferred from a wheel-chair to a bed, and vice versa. The number of nurses available to one patient further aggravates the problem. The best way to address this challenge is through campaigns that aim to educate nurses on their need to always use of assistive equipment. Government ergonomic policies should also be revised to protect nurses from legal and ethical issues that arise out of their need to consider their safety first.
