Raphael Santi (1483-1521) was one of the greatest draftsmen during High Renaissance Rome as he extensively used antiquity, architecture, and paintings to stress and ancient beauty, and initiated the mapping and composition of Rome.[1] Raphael was born in 1483, and his father immediately shoved him in the world of art. Raphael’s upbringing provided him with ample opportunity to engage with the Italian environment and its artistic community, influencing his style and approach to artistic expressions. After the death of his parents (1491-1494), Raphael sought apprenticeship from the celebrated Pietro Perugino, through whom he learned different techniques that refined his unique style of expression.[2] For example, it is through the training that Raphael painted the Marriage of the Virgin, an artistic expression that established movement, emotions, and sophistication. The painting revealed his grasp of art and a unique style of expression. Raphael moved to Rome in 1508 where he nurtured his career for the rest of his life. In this paper, Raphael’s contribution to the reconstruction of Ancient Rome is explored. The document demonstrates how Raphael made the most of classical antiquity to address the architectural needs in Rome. His artworks show that Raphael was a unique contemporary artist with sophistication and coherence during the high renaissance in Rome, and left an immense impact because he expressed his ideas and style by honouring the classical sensibility of classical Roman art and architecture.
