WHAT MOTIVATES EMPLOYEES (A QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF CHINESE AND UK CULTURES IN THE WORKPLACE OF SMES

Instructions

  1. We have already written a Dissertation Proposal for the title: “What motivates employees? A quantitative study of Chinese and UK cultures in the workplace of SMEs”. The Proposal has received feedback and is attached in “Proposal – with teacher feedback.docx”
  2. We have also written the Literature Review and Methodology sections in “Lit Review&Methodology.docx”

We now need to finish the entire dissertation and combine it into one complete file.

A key change required is that we need to use a low response rate to our questionnaires. Out of the 200 questionnaires sent (100 to UK, 100 to China), we should only get around a total of 80 responses (i.e. 40% response rate).

This study explores the motivating factors for employees in Chinese and UK SMEs. The investigation takes into account the role of cultural differences between the two contexts. Investigating employee motivation, in this case, is based on the increasing importance of workplace morale for the competitiveness and performance of an origination (Horwitz, Heng and Quazi, 2003). While employee motivation has conventionally been associated with large firms, small and medium enterprises are also increasingly focusing on employees as one of the key stakeholders that influence their performance. SMEs’ performance and competitiveness depend on their ability to reduce the costs of products and maximize outputs to meet the market demand (Frank, Finnegan, and Taylor, 2004).
