The aim of this paper is what is women’s experiences of promotion in career advancement in the industry in China.
The objectives of the research include:
- To explore career experiences of women working for organizations in China
- To determine how organizations can help in alleviating institutional drawbacks to breaking the glass ceiling
Notably, the inability of women to scale upwards in organizational leadership positions. According to Catalyst (2014), women account for 4.6% of the executives in the 500 companies by Fortune. However there only 17.5% of firms in China have women as top managers and 45 women represented 9.2% of boards46 and 22% of CFOs47 of companies in China (Leopold, et al, 2016). This phenomenon indicates that women have not cracked the glass ceiling given the persistence of institutional or social setbacks. The study seeks to explicate how organizations can facilitate the adoption of equal-gender representation policies and reforms to eliminate institutional and social-based drawbacks to equal representation.
